How compound growth works

1 min read

In shortGrowth on top of growth, and why time matters more than you'd think.

General information only. It isn't financial advice and doesn't know your situation.

Compound growth means your money earns a return, and then that return earns too. A return is what your money makes, from interest or from rising prices.

Example: $10,000 growing 5% a year

After 1 year
$10,500
After 2 years
$11,025
After 10 years
about $16,300
After 20 years
about $26,500
After 30 years
about $43,200

Example only, with no fees or tax. Real returns go up and down and are never promised.

Look at the last 10 years. They add about $16,700, a little more than the first 20 years put together. That's time doing the work.

Starting earlier often matters more than starting bigger.

It works against you on debt. Interest on a card compounds too, which is why clearing it comes first.
