Investing basics
In shortShares, funds, risk, time and fees, in plain words.
General information only. It isn't financial advice and doesn't know your situation.
Investing means buying something you hope will grow in value over time. It's for money you won't need for years.
A share is a small piece of one company. Its price goes up and down with how the company and the market are doing.
A fund pools many people's money to buy lots of things at once. One fund can hold hundreds of companies, so one bad company hurts less. An index fund follows a whole market.
Risk means the value can fall, sometimes a lot, and for years. The longer you can wait, the more time the ups and downs have to even out. Money you need in the next few years usually belongs in savings.
Before you buy, ask: what is it, what does it cost each year, and could I leave it alone if it fell?
In Stuffed, add shares or investments on Net worth to keep them in view.
